What the teachers scholarship covers: tuition, housing, allowance and insurance

The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance. The figures are set in Appendix 1 of the Application Guidelines for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025, published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC). The guidelines are for the 2025 cycle, so readers must check the guidelines for the current year.

What the appendix says

Appendix 1 opens by stating that the scholarship supports tuition, accommodation, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance. The living allowance excludes four-week study programme students.

Tuition

Appendix 1, item 1 says the Host Institutions use the tuition fees for the education and management of scholarship recipients, cultural programming and HSK tests. For online programmes, the scholarship provides support for tuition fees only. Item 1 gives no tuition amount.

Accommodation

Appendix 1, item 2 says the Host Institutions use the accommodation fees to provide free on-campus accommodation, typically in double rooms.

Scholarship recipients may live off-campus after applying to and being approved by the Host Institution. In that case, item 2 sets the following allowances:

Living allowance

Appendix 1, item 3 says the Host Institutions pay the living allowance to recipients on a monthly basis. The amounts by category are:

Item 3 also sets the following conditions on payment.

• Recipients must register with the university within the period stated in the Letter of Admission. Otherwise, the scholarship will be revoked.
• Recipients registered on or before the 15th of the month (inclusive) receive the full allowance for that month. Recipients registered after the 15th receive half of the amount.
• If a recipient leaves China for more than 15 days for personal reasons during the study period, the allowance is suspended for the time abroad. Summer and winter vacations are excluded.
• If a recipient is suspended or withdrawn from school for personal reasons, or is subject to disciplinary action by the Host Institution, the allowance is suspended from the date of suspension, withdrawal or notification of disciplinary action.
• For graduating students, the allowance is paid until half a month after the graduation date set by the Host Institution.

Insurance

Appendix 1, item 4 says the Host Institutions buy the comprehensive medical insurance in accordance with the applicable regulations on overseas students stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. The premiums are:
