Living allowance on a study programme: amounts and how it is paid

Item 3 of Appendix 1 of the Application Guidelines for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025 sets the living allowance. The Host Institution pays it monthly, at RMB 2,500, RMB 3,000 or RMB 3,500 per person, depending on the student's category. These figures belong to that scholarship only and are not a general rate for self-funded students.

Amounts by category

Item 3 sets the following monthly amounts per person.

Category Monthly living allowance (RMB)
Undergraduates 2,500
One-year study programme students 2,500
One-semester study programme students 2,500
Master's students in International Chinese Language Education 3,000
Doctoral students in International Chinese Language Education 3,500

The coverage sentence at the head of Appendix 1 excludes four-week study programme students from the living allowance.

Who pays and how often

Item 3 states that the Host Institutions pay the living allowance to scholarship recipients on a monthly basis.

Registration and the 15th of the month

Scholarship recipients must register with the university within the period stipulated in the Letter of Admission. Otherwise, the scholarship will be revoked (item 3).

Students registered before the 15th (inclusive) of the month receive the full allowance for that month. Students registered after the 15th receive half of the amount (item 3).

Absence, suspension and graduation

Item 3 sets three points on when the allowance stops or ends.

  1. If a recipient leaves China for more than 15 days for personal reasons during the study period, the allowance is suspended for the period of absence from China. Summer and winter vacations are excluded from this count.
  2. If a recipient is suspended or withdrawn from school for personal reasons, or is subject to disciplinary action by the Host Institution, the allowance is suspended from the date of suspension, withdrawal, or notification of disciplinary action.
  3. Graduating students receive the allowance until half a month after the graduation date set by the Host Institution.

These figures come from the 2025 edition of the guidelines. Read the guidelines for the current year before relying on any amount or date.
