Leaving China during term on the teachers scholarship: the 15-day rule
Under item 3 of Appendix 1 of the Application Guidelines for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025, a recipient who leaves China for more than 15 days for personal reasons during the study period has the living allowance suspended for the period of absence. Summer and winter vacations are excluded from this count. The rule is set by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC). See also Terms on this site.
The 15-day rule
Item 3 states that if a scholarship recipient leaves China for more than 15 days for personal reasons during the study period (excluding summer and winter vacations), the living allowance during the period of absence from China will be suspended.
The rule applies to personal reasons. The text of item 3 as given does not separate absences by length beyond the 15-day threshold.
Suspension, withdrawal and disciplinary action
Item 3 deals with a second case. If a recipient is suspended or withdrawn from school for personal reasons, or is subject to disciplinary action by the Host Institution, the living allowance is suspended from the date of suspension, withdrawal, or notification of disciplinary action.
Graduating students
Item 3 also sets an end date for graduating students. The living allowance for graduating students is paid until half a month after the graduation date set by the Host Institution.
Scope
These rules belong to the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. They are conditions of that scholarship only. The 2025 guidelines describe the 2025 cycle. Readers must consult the guidelines for the current year.
