How far ahead to apply for a China study visa: validity, entries and one embassy's answers
The Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom advises applying 1–2 months before the planned date of entry to China. Article 36 of the Regulations on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners defines when a visa is valid, but it does not set a lead time for applying. For visa categories, see the X1 or X2 page.
What Article 36 says about validity
Article 36 of the Regulations (State Council Decree No. 637) defines the terms that appear on a visa. The table below uses its wording.
| Term | Meaning under Article 36 |
|---|---|
| Validity period of the entry | The period during which the visa holder may enter China. Unless the issuing authority specifies otherwise, the visa is valid from the date of issuance until Beijing time 24:00 on the expiring day. |
| Number of entries | The number of times the visa holder may enter China within the validity period. |
| Duration of stay | The period the visa holder may stay in China after each entry. It begins from the next day of entry. |
| Short-term | Staying in China for a period not exceeding 180 days (including 180 days). |
| Long-term or resident | Residing in China for a period exceeding 180 days. |
Article 36 also states that the period of time for examination and approval, and the validity period of the receipt of acceptance issued by the exit and entry administration authority of the public security organ, are calculated in working days, excluding legal holidays.
What the Embassy in the United Kingdom advises on timing
The Embassy of the PRC in the United Kingdom publishes its own answers on visa timing. These are the embassy's statements, and other missions publish their own answers.
Question 5 of the embassy's FAQ says it is advised that the application be submitted 1–2 months before the planned date of entry to China. The embassy states that applications made too early may result in the visa expiring on the day of actual travel. It also states that an application made too close to the intended travel date may lead to postponing the trip because of an unexpected delay in visa processing.
Question 6 of the same FAQ says that if the documents are well prepared, processing will normally take four working days, although approval time may vary for individual applications. The embassy states that an express service taking three working days is available for an emergency or urgent travel, and that it carries an extra fee. The embassy also states that applicants shall collect their visas within the date they are told. Under the embassy's answer, a visa left uncollected for more than 3 months after the proposed collection date will be disposed of as unclaimed.
When a visa takes effect and when it expires
Question 9 of the embassy's FAQ states that, unless otherwise specified, a visa is valid from the date of issue. It lists four situations in which a visa expires:
- The time of arrival in China is later than 24:00 (Beijing Time) of the Expiry Date given on the visa page.
- The number of entries has been used up.
- The visa has been cancelled or declared invalid by the Chinese authorities.
- Other circumstances in compliance with Chinese laws and regulations.
The embassy's explanation of validity, entries and duration adds that a holder of an invalid visa will be refused entry to China. It also states that an overstay violates the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China, the Regulations on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners and other relevant laws, and could result in a fine or other penalty. These statements are the embassy's, and the Law and the Regulations are separate instruments.
Questions
How many months before entry should I apply for a China visa?
The Embassy of the PRC in the United Kingdom advises applying 1–2 months before the planned date of entry (Question 5 of its FAQ). Article 36 of the Regulations sets no lead time for applying.

Under Article 36 of the Regulations, a visa is valid from the date of issuance until Beijing time 24:00 on the expiring day, unless the issuing authority specifies otherwise.
