Adults on a short Chinese course: what the rules ask about age

Articles 11, 12 and 38 of Order No. 42 set no age limit for adult students on a short course. The only age-based rule in these articles is in Article 38, which covers international students under 18 whose parents are not permanently resident in China. Admission conditions otherwise follow each university's own brochure, and you can compare the study routes on the Routes page.

What Order No. 42 says

The English wording below is this site's translation of the Chinese text.

Article 38, first paragraph. A school that admits an international student under 18 whose parents are not permanently resident in China shall require the parents to formally entrust a foreign or Chinese national who is permanently resident in China as the student's guardian. Relevant proof materials shall be provided.

Article 38, second paragraph. A school may accept international students who study in short-term groups, but it shall sign an agreement with the foreign dispatching unit in advance. For schools providing primary or secondary education, the dispatching unit shall complete the legal formalities for minors required by its home country's law, and shall send a person with the group to act as guardian during the study.

Article 11. Under national admission rules, each institution formulates and publishes its own international student brochure. It admits students under the conditions and procedures the brochure sets.

Article 12. The school reviews the applicant's admission qualification and financial guarantee proof, and it tests or assesses the applicant. The school decides admission. A school shall not admit an applicant who does not meet the admission conditions.

The scholarship age line

The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship has its own age conditions. They apply to that scholarship only and are not general admission rules for self-funded students. The source is the Application Guidelines for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025, published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC).

  • Section I, item 5 requires applicants to be aged between 16 and 35 on 1 September 2025.
  • Section I, item 5 says the maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45.
  • Section I, item 5 says applicants for a scholarship for a Bachelor's degree shall be younger than 25 under most circumstances.
  • Appendix 2, item D requires applicants under 18 to provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.

These dates belong to the 2025 cycle and have passed. Read the guidelines for the current year before you rely on any date or age line.
